Welcome to Georgia Plays Soccer! This is a newsletter covering some of the many aspects of the culture of soccer in the largest state east of the Mississippi. We are an advanced topics class at the Carmical Sports Media Institute at the University of Georgia. As part of our work learning about the history and culture of soccer, primarily in Georgia, we will be covering four beats in this newsletter:
Some of the final rounds of qualifying for the 2026 men’s World Cup, which will be played in Atlanta among other ventures
Professional and major (American) college teams with players who have roots in Georgia
Some of the state’s stronger NCAA and NAIA teams
The top youth teams in Georgia Soccer and the Southeast Club Champions League as well as clubs in the Elite Club National League
While we’re limited by geography and time, we hope to be able to bring light to the amazing stories that arise from the beautiful game and its players.
If you have any questions or story pitches for this newsletter, please contact the instructor (that’s me), Welch Suggs, at [email protected]. I’m also writing a book on the history and culture of soccer in Georgia and would love to make more connections.
World Cup Qualifying
UAE, Iraq
In the FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers, the UAE is ranked second out of three teams with two wins, one loss and two draws in its last five games. Iran is ranked second out of the six teams in the FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers third round Group B with two wins, two losses and one draw. Iraq also has four Arab Cup titles.

Colombia
There are two games remaining in the World Cup qualifiers for CONMEBOL. Colombia currently sits in sixth place, which is the last automatic qualification spot for the confederation. The nation failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after finishing in sixth place, but the expansion of the World Cup to include 48 teams means that Colombia can remain there and still make the tournament. Colombia had some notable results over the past year, including a win and draw against Argentina in the qualifiers. Los Cafeteros also reached the 2024 Copa America final, in which they lost 1-0 to Argentina.
Venezuela
Venezuela is the only team in CONMEBOL which has never qualified for the World Cup. Venezuela sits in seventh place in the CONMEBOL standings with 18 points, four points below sixth-place Colombia. Top six is enough to earn an automatic qualification for the World Cup, while seventh place earns a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs. If Venezuela finishes in seventh, it will have to play in a six-team tournament against teams from other confederations for the final two qualification spots.
Venezuela struggled in the previous qualification cycle, finishing in last place. Venezuela topped its group in the 2024 Copa America with wins over Ecuador, Mexico and Jamaica before losing in the quarterfinals in a penalty shootout against Canada.

Austria and Israel
At the UEFA European Championship in 2024, Austria advanced to the knockout round of 16 yet came up short of a goal to Turkey, while Israel lost to Iceland in the qualifying round. Israel was eliminated from the 2024 Paris Olympics after not advancing past the group stage, also. In early 2025, Austria made an appearance in the UEFA Nations League playoff but lost to Serbia. In recent World Cup qualifiers, the team defeated Romania 2-1 then San Marino 4-0. Israel has gone on to win two of their three World Cup qualifiers versus Estonia but lost 4-2 to Norway.

Paraguay
In the 2024 season, Paraguay knocked out of Copa America after defeats by Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica. After this, a coaching change brought Gustavo Alfaro to Paraguay, where he has yet to be defeated. Paraguay had valuable wins against Brazil and Argentina and a crucial draw against Bolivia to remain in qualification position for the World Cup.
New Caledonia
Amid civil unrest, the country of New Caledonia withdrew its team from the OFC Nations Cup. New Caledonia had an important win over Tahiti to advance to the World Cup qualifiers against New Zealand. There it was defeated 3-0 to imperil its chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Virginia Miller
Namibia
Namibia is 3-3-0 and second in FIFA World Cup qualifying in Group H. The team has scored eight goals, allowing two. Namibia’s next game will be on September 5 against Malawi (2-0-4). These teams have faced each other twice in the past five games, and Namibia won one and each team tied the other. This will be a must win for Namibia looking forward to advance to the World Cup.
Gabon
Gabon is also in second place for Group F in FIFA qualifying with a 5-0-1 record. The team averages one goal against per game, while scoring 12 across six. Next game will be against Seychelles (0-0-6) on Sept. 3.

Slovakia and Ukraine
Both Slovakia and Ukraine begin their World Cup qualification campaigns in the September window. Slovakia has been placed in Group A alongside Germany, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg. They first host Germany in Bratislava on Sept. 4 before travelling to Luxembourg on Sept. 7. Ukraine, meanwhile, has been drawn into Group D with France, Azerbaijan and Iceland. Ukraine begins by hosting France in Wrocław, Poland (they can’t play in Ukraine due to the war) on Sept. 5 before facing Azerbaijan in Baku on Sept. 9.
Jake Branan
Albania
The Albanian national football team is halfway done with its World Cup qualification matches. The Albanians sit at second in group K with five points, and England leads the group with nine points. They secured two points in early June by holding Latvia to a 1-1 draw and Serbia to a scoreless draw. England beat Albania back in March 2-0, but Albania went on to beat Andorra 3-0 three days later. They will play a friendly against Gibraltar on Sept. 4th before playing their next qualification match on the 9th against Latvia.
Croatia
The Croatian national football team ranks 10th in the world according to the FIFA men’s world rankings. Almost five months ago, they were eliminated from the Nations League quarterfinals by France in penalties. Since then, the team played two of their World Cup qualification matches where they dominantly beat Gibraltar 7-0 and Czechia 5-1 in early June. The Croatians sit at second with six points in group L behind Czechia, but they have only played two matches whereas Czechia has nine points through four matches.
Blake Caviness
Wales
Wales is in Group J alongside Belgium, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan, and Liechtenstein. The winner of the group qualifies directly for the World Cup and the runner-up enters the playoffs. Wales is currently in second place behind North Macedonia with seven points from four games. They narrowly lost 4-3 to Belgium on June 9th. Belgium currently sits in third place with four points, but it has only played two games, giving them two ‘games in hand’ over both Wales and North Macedonia.
Hungary
Hungary is in Group F with the Republic of Ireland, Armenia and Portugal. Since Group F contains four teams, they will start qualifiers in September. Only groups with five teams (like Wales) have already started playing matches, these began in March. In terms of form in 2025, Belgium has only played two games that aren’t friendlies. Both were Nations League games versus Turkey, where the Belgians suffered two defeats, 3-1 and 3-0.

Bolivia
Bolivia has struggled a bit this year in terms of international matchups. On March 20, the Bolivians lost to Peru in their first World Cup qualifying match of the year 3-1. Five days later, on March 25, the team drew 0-0 to Uruguay. Moving into the summer, Bolivia lost to Venezuela 2-0 on June 6, but won its matchup with Chile four days later 2-0. That match was chippy, with Bolivia receiving both a yellow—given to Diego Arroyo in the third minute of stoppage time in the second half—and a red card given in the 19th minute to Lucas Chávez. Bolivia currently sits at eighth in FIFA’s South American Football Confederation.
Uruguay
Uruguay has also only won one match in the 2025 year for World Cup qualifying. Its first match on March 21 ended in a 1-0 loss to Argentina. Four days later the Uruguayans drew 0-0 with Bolivia. Paraguay then defeated them on June 5. Finally, Uruguay would come away with a win against Venezuela at 2-0, with goals from Rodrigo Aguirre in the 43rd minute and Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the 47th. They are currently ranked fourth in FIFA’s South American Football Confederation.

Sweden
The Swedish men’s national team is set to begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers on September 5th against Slovenia. The Swedes, currently ranked 29th according to the FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking, were drawn into a group with Kosovo, Slovenia and Switzerland. They will have to finish at the top of the group to secure automatic qualification. If they finish second, they will be at the mercy of a playoff round to determine qualification. Sweden is led by the striker duo of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres was recently purchased by the London-based club for $74 million. Danish manager Jon Dahl Tomasson will lead the Blågult into FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers as the Swedes will attempt to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Sweden is currently in good form after topping its UEFA Nations League Group and winning eight of its last 10 matches.
Greece
Greece’s men’s national team begins its FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying journey at home in Piraeus against Belarus. The Greeks, led by West Ham defender Konstantinos Mavropanos and Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis, will compete with Belarus, Denmark and Scotland for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They will have to finish at the top of the group to secure automatic qualification. If they finish second, they will be at the mercy of a playoff round to determine qualification. Greece, currently ranked 39th in the FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking, has won eight of its last 10 games and finished level with England at the top of its UEFA Nations League group. Despite winning the UEFA Euros in 2004, Greece has had a modest history at the World Cup. The Greeks have only qualified for the FIFA World Cup three times and have only made it to the Round of 16 once.

Washington Spirit
The Washington Spirit sits in third place in the NWSL with 27 points and 15 games played. Washington trails league leaders KC Current by 12 points and is behind the Orlando Pride by goal difference. The Washington Spirit is unlikely to win the league title, but it has earned silverware this year. Washington beat Orlando in a penalty shootout in March to win the NWSL Challenge Cup. The Spirit will also play its first game in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup this month.
Midfielder Croix Bethune was drafted third overall by Washington last year after playing for Georgia. She earned NWSL Rookie of the Year and helped Washington finish second in the league. She has played just 10 games this season after suffering an injury in 2024 and has earned one assist. In 2023 Bethune earned multiple honors at Georgia, including being named to the SEC All-Tournament Team. She also helped Georgia win the 2023 SEC championship.

He grew up in Georgia and went to Furman University in South Carolina before being drafted by FC Dallas in 2013. He was traded to LAFC where he was selected for the MLS All-star Fan XI team.
Next, he was traded to Nashville, where he won back-to-backdefender of the year awards, in 2020-2021. He missed a large portion of the season with a concussion and is now suffering with a knee injury. He wasn’t in the squad vs St Louis due to the knee injury and therefore likely won’t start vs New York on 17th August.

Hurlock was a standout in the Atlanta United academy side that went to last season’s UPSL state final, which earned him 12 appearances with Atlanta United two and even training opportunities with the first team. Virginia will hope Hurlock can bolster its attack after the seven-time national champion Cavaliers finished mid-table in last season’s ACC standings.

The University of North Carolina’s women’s team is recovering from a disappointing loss to Tennessee to open the season. Two of the Tar Heels come from the state of Georgia: Camie Maynor from Atlanta, Georgia and Lauren Malsom from Marietta, Georgia. In high school, Maynor competed for Roswell High School, helping them to earn three state championships. In her final season last year, the Hornets went undefeated, going 22-0. Malsom also had a successful senior year, with her team going 17-4, though ultimately coming up short in the Final Four. As freshmen, it is yet to be seen how they will contribute to the Tar Heels program.

Mercer women’s soccer lost 2-0 to No. 22 Oklahoma State in its season opener on Thursday, but the Bears hope that loss is just a blip in their attempt to build on a strong 2024 season in which they finished tied for third in Southern Conference play and second in the overall table. Mercer will have to adapt to life without Larkin Thomason, far and away last season’s top scorer with 16 goals, although second-place Jada Moorman is returning for her senior year. The Bears will travel to Presbyterian on Aug. 21 before returning home to face West Georgia on Aug. 24.
